Feeling the Hybrid Fatigue? You’re Not Alone

If you’ve found yourself feeling a little more drained lately — even though you’re technically working fewer hours at home or enjoying more flexibility — you’re not imagining it. Many home visitors are feeling what’s becoming known as hybrid fatigue.
Hybrid work sounds great in theory: some days you’re in the field meeting with families, some days you’re at home writing notes, and other times you’re in the office for meetings or trainings. But all this constant shifting can take a surprising toll on your energy, focus, and mood.
Let’s talk about why hybrid fatigue happens — and some simple ways to help manage it.
Why Does Hybrid Work Feel So Exhausting?
Hybrid work creates a kind of mental juggling act. Each environment — a home visit, your home office, or the agency office — requires a different mindset, different tools, and different kinds of emotional energy. You’re not just switching locations; you’re constantly switching gears.
Add to that:
The emotional weight of supporting families.
The paperwork that always seems to follow you home.
The unpredictability of your schedule.
No wonder your brain feels a little tired.
Ways to Take Care of Yourself in a Hybrid World
While we may not be able to fully eliminate hybrid fatigue, there are things you can do to protect your energy and stay connected:
1️⃣ Name It.
Sometimes just recognizing what you’re feeling helps. You’re not doing anything wrong — this kind of work setup simply asks a lot of you. Give yourself some grace.
2️⃣ Protect Your Transitions.
When you’re constantly shifting between visits, paperwork, and meetings, your brain needs a moment to reset. Even a few minutes between tasks — a short walk, stretching, or just closing your eyes for 60 seconds — can help your mind recalibrate.
3️⃣ Set Boundaries (and Keep Them).
It’s easy to slip into answering emails at night or finishing notes after dinner. But rest matters. If possible, set a personal “shutdown time” for work each day — and stick to it. Your brain (and your family) will thank you.
4️⃣ Stay Connected with Your Team.
One of the hardest parts of hybrid work is how easy it is to feel disconnected from your coworkers. Try to join short team check-ins, virtual coffee chats, or in-person gatherings when you can. A quick laugh or a shared story helps remind you that you’re not alone in this work.
5️⃣ Keep Your “Why” Close.
When the days feel long or scattered, try to reconnect with the purpose behind your work. Think about the progress you’ve seen in families. Remember the impact you’ve made. Purpose is one of the best defenses against fatigue.
6️⃣ Take Care of You.
You give a lot to others. Don’t forget to give something to yourself, too — whether that’s enough sleep, a hobby you enjoy, quiet time, or reaching out when you need extra support.
You’re Doing Hard, Important Work!
Hybrid work isn’t always easy, and it’s okay to admit that. The fact that you’re feeling some fatigue means you care about your work and your clients. Be gentle with yourself as you navigate the ups and downs of this mixed environment. You’re not alone — and you’re doing meaningful work every single day.
